Controlling URL-itis Helps SEO AND Site Performance
Drupal is a powerful tool for creating and distributing your content. Out of the box, it will deliver this content via numerous unique URLs, add in Views, Panels, and other auto-generating URL-type modules and you can quickly go from a few thousand URLs to a million or so more. This translates to tons of potentially un-manageable duplicate and low value pages - which Google and others will have to crawl. The more pages search engines have to spider, the less likely they will pick up on the most valuable content in time for it to be relevant.
During this session, I will review the tools and the process I took to reduce the number of indexed pages on my Drupal site from over 1,000,000 to under 20,000 in search indexes. My results have shown a significant increase in search traffic and a massive decline in search crawler traffic. While I'm not an "SEO Expert," these are the results we are all looking to get.
